Pearlescent Effect Pigments

Pearlescent Effect
Pigments

Pearlescent effect pigments consist of a substrate having a laminar (layered) structure of high aspect ratio (surface

dimension/thickness). The interference colors are derived from coating TiO2 onto these high aspect ratio substrates in very specific thicknesses. Due to the difference in refractive index (speed of light through a medium) between

the oxide and substate layer, incoming wavelengths of white light, hitting the coated flakes, are separated into very specific reflection and transmission components. For example, a thin layer of TiO2 results in a white “pearlescent” effect, whereas a thick layer of TiO2 results in a green reflection component with a corresponding red transmission component or “iridescent” effect. By fine tuning the thickness of TiO2 all colors of the spectrum are possible. As the light continues to pass through the film it is further reflected off nearby flakes in a similar manner, which when seen by an observer, gives a sense of depth to the formulation in which they are used.

In a similar manner, varying thicknesses of Fe2O3 by itself, or in combination with TiO2, result in non-metallic metallic effects with a “pearlescent luster”. However, due to the absorption color component of Fe2O3 an observer perceives a “metallic” luster instead. Thin layers of Fe2O3 result in shades of gold and as they become thicker progress through bronze, copper, and russet color effects. In addition, various colors can be imparted by using various colorants (organic pigments/inorganic pigments, etc.).

Appearance of Pearlescent Effect Pigments

Pearlescent effect pigments appear differently depending on the substrate type and particle size used.

Applications

Automotive OEM Coatings, Industrial Coatings, Plastics, Inks, Cosmetic and Personal Care

Metallic Pigments

Aluminum Pigments

CQV’s Aluminum Pigments are true metallic “Silver Dollar” shaped flakes. They are manufactured using aluminum powder which under goes a milling process. Due to the unique characteristics of metal, they have an obvious metallic luster, and provide excellent levels of opacity for added protection to surfaces on which they are applied.

Characteristics of Aluminum Pigments

Strong metallic luster due to its smooth, highly reflective surface, and flake shape (Silver Dollar).

Reflection effects vary depending on the size, thickness, and shape of the flakes.

Applications

Automotive OEM Coatings, Industrial Coatings, Elastomeric Coatings, Inks

Metallic Pigments

Colored Aluminum

CQV’s Colored Aluminum provides metallic luster and highly saturated colors by coating aluminum flakes with metal oxide.

These products use silver dollar type aluminum flake to provide both high opacity, and high chroma, through our unique coating technology.

Applications

Automotive OEM Coatings, Industrial Coatings, Plastics, Inks

Use of Products

Industrial

CQV’s industrial grade products are effect pigments that can be applied to various industries in which

“high performance” is not required, such as general industrial coatings, plastics, and inks.

Cosmetic

CQV’s cosmetic grade products can be used in various color and personal care product formulations where the level of microorganisms and heavy metals must be controlled and monitored according to cosmetic manufacturing requirements. All CQV cosmetic grade products supplied not only comply, but in many cases surpass, all global and domestic regulations for use. (For details on regulations, compliance, or other regulatory data please contact us.)

Exterior

CQV’s exterior grade products are surface treated to enhance weather resistance, long term durability, and compatibility. They can be used in various “high performance” applications such as automotive exterior, automotive

refinish, as well as exterior architectural coatings. CQV conducts extensive accelerated, and actual long term outdoor exposure studies to verify the durability of their exterior grade products. These accelerated and real time tests are often followed up with extensive physical property testing of the resulting weathered samples.
